Amazon WorkMail is not a viable mailbox for a new organisation. AWS stopped accepting new customers on 30 April 2026 and will end support on 31 March 2027. After that date the console and WorkMail resources are no longer accessible. Existing accounts that signed up before the cutoff can keep using the service until then. Pricing still applies only to those existing accounts, and it is billed per enabled user, not as a shared workspace.
Is a new WorkMail account still possible?
No. The Amazon WorkMail end-of-support page says WorkMail will no longer accept new customers beginning 30 April 2026. Accounts that signed up before that date can continue until 31 March 2027. After 31 March 2027 you will no longer be able to use Amazon WorkMail, and you will no longer be able to access the console or WorkMail resources.
The FAQ still describes signing in to the console and creating an organisation. Treat that as leftover getting-started copy, not as an open signup. Do not start a migration plan that depends on a new WorkMail trial.
What happens on 31 March 2027?
Support ends. Mailboxes, the web app, and admin resources stop being usable. AWS tells existing customers to migrate before that date and to export mailbox content. The export path is the mailbox export guide, not an automatic handoff to another host.
AWS names Zoho Mail and Zoom Mail as examples with migration tooling, and says you can migrate to other in-market hosts. Arawa Mail is not on that list. This article does not treat Arawa as an AWS recommendation.
What WorkMail pricing still means for existing accounts
Check the live WorkMail pricing page for the current per-user rate before you budget a remaining WorkMail year; this article does not quote a dollar figure.
The WorkMail FAQ and quotas page state:
- You are charged for user accounts per month, based on the average number of active users. A user activated mid-month is prorated. A deactivated user is billed through the end of the month, with no credit for remaining days.
- Groups and resources are not billed as users. Interoperability and IMAP are included in mailbox pricing.
- Each mailbox has a 50 GB storage limit.
- Outgoing and incoming messages are capped at 29 MB of unencoded data, or 40 MB MIME. That quota is documented as hard and not changeable.
- The default quota is 10,000 external recipients per user per day and 100,000 external recipients per AWS account per day.
That shape is per enabled mailbox, with a large individual store and no documented transactional sending API. Application mail is a separate AWS product. If you are comparing SES, use ArawaMail vs Amazon SES, not this page.
How Arawa Mail pricing differs
Arawa Mail prices a workspace that includes mailboxes and HTTP API sending, not a fee per enabled user. The pricing page shows:
| Plan | Monthly price | Team members | Mailbox storage | Transactional sends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 | 1 GB workspace | 3,000, no overage |
| Pro | $20 | 10 | 10 GB workspace | 50,000, then $0.0004 |
| Business | $80 | 50 | 50 GB workspace | 100,000, then $0.0003 |
Arawa Mail plans list mailbox storage per plan (1 GB, 10 GB and 50 GB), while WorkMail gives each enabled user a 50 GB mailbox. Application mail on WorkMail also needs a separate service. Compare the storage model before you compare the headline price. What email actually costs walks through that trade-off.
Mailboxes, sending API, and calendar
| Capability | Amazon WorkMail | Arawa Mail | Source status |
|---|---|---|---|
| New customers | Closed since 30 April 2026 | Open signup | AWS end-of-support page; Arawa app |
| End date | 31 March 2027, then console and resources inaccessible | No published shutdown | AWS end-of-support page |
| Mailbox | 50 GB per user | Workspace pool: 1 / 10 / 50 GB | WorkMail FAQ; Arawa pricing page |
| Billing | Per enabled user; groups and resources free | Plan price for the workspace | WorkMail FAQ; Arawa pricing page |
| Transactional HTTP API | Not a WorkMail feature; SES is separate | Same workspace, with sending API keys | Arawa sending guide |
| Desktop clients | Outlook, EAS and IMAP clients | IMAP 993 and SMTP 465 SSL/TLS documented | WorkMail admin guide; Arawa connect-device guide |
| Calendar and contacts | Documented product: web app, Outlook, EAS | Pricing table lists them; deletion docs mention calendar data and personal contacts. No calendar guide in the public docs index | Do not treat as Outlook parity |
| Journaling, region choice, customer-managed keys, Exchange interop | Documented | Not documented | WorkMail admin guide |
| AI mailbox connector | Not a WorkMail feature | MCP at app.arawamail.com/mcp/email | Arawa AI assistants guide |
Arawa's connect-device guide documents IMAP on port 993 and SMTP on port 465 with SSL/TLS for desktop and mobile clients. The port choice itself is covered in SMTP port 465 vs 587.
If the reason you wanted WorkMail was Outlook calendar, room resources, or Exchange interoperability, Arawa Mail does not document those. AWS's named alternatives are a better fit for that requirement. Zoho Mail is one of them; the mailbox comparison is on ArawaMail vs Zoho Mail.
Migrating from WorkMail to Arawa Mail
Arawa Mail can host custom-domain mailboxes after the domain is an active Cloudflare zone, or registered with Arawa Mail and still on its nameservers. Receiving must be active before accounts exist. Sending is a later step that adds DKIM CNAMEs and a custom MAIL FROM domain. There is no WorkMail importer in the docs. Export from WorkMail, then create accounts and move mail with a client or an operator process. Use the migration checklist and confirm the live MX with find the provider from MX before you cut over.
Domain setup stays on business email. Product teams already on SES should stay on the SES comparison.
FAQ
Is Amazon WorkMail still accepting new customers?
No. AWS stopped accepting new customers on 30 April 2026.
When does Amazon WorkMail end?
Support ends on 31 March 2027. After that date the console and WorkMail resources are not accessible.
What is Amazon WorkMail pricing?
Existing accounts are billed per enabled user per month, with 50 GB per mailbox. Check the AWS pricing page for the current per-user rate.
Does AWS recommend Arawa Mail as a WorkMail replacement?
No. AWS names Zoho Mail and Zoom Mail as examples, and says other hosts are possible.
Does Arawa Mail include a sending API?
Yes. Mailboxes and HTTP API sending sit on the same workspace once the domain is sending-active. WorkMail does not provide that API.
Can I import a WorkMail mailbox automatically?
Not with a documented Arawa importer. Use AWS mailbox export, then create the new accounts yourself.
